DJM Aerial Solutions were recently commissioned to carry out an in depth inspection and survey routine, resulting in internal point cloud and external 3D Models of a property that comes under Historic England Grade 2 Listed Heritage Site.
Grade 2 Listed Heritage Site
Historic England has in the past used drones for several of their operations including the survey of many of their heritage sites across the country. This heritage site, in particular, was a new entity to Historic England due to the complete dilapidation of the building and immediate internals associated with it.
The grade II listed heritage site had become a playground for local youths and the relatively new trend of urban exploration, plus a drug den for the squatters. The building had been disused and left empty for 25 years. The local criminal fraternity has had their fun and generally raised the majority of the grade II heritage site to the ground due to fires causing the structural failure of the roof asset and then the external elements to penetrate allowing rot and extreme fatigue of structural timber resulting in the failure of internal floors and levels.
The local emergency services have also issued a statement stipulating that they won’t be entering the grade II building should an arson attack become evident again due to the danger that exists on entering the heritage site.
The Elios
Due to the recent addition of our confined space collision tolerant drone technology, the Elios DJM Aerial Solutions were the ideal choice for Historic England and their contractor list allowing us to enter the dilapidated heritage site unscathed using drone technology to analyze the condition of the buildings and decide whether or not safe to enter.
DJM Aerial Solutions used the Elios to fly around the grade II heritage site capturing data of the integrity of the building and relay it directly back to our ground station where the team of CARE (Conservation Accreditation Register for Engineers) structural engineers and surveyors were present. Allowing on the spot decision making to happen.
After completion of the internal survey via the Elios DJM Aerial Solutions deployed the Matrice 210 and Zenmuse Z30 to capture the required data set for the externals of the building allowing enough data to render the files into a densified point cloud and build a 3D Model with High Definition Mesh overlay. Which gives Historic England sufficient data to analyze the Grade II heritage site condition from a different perspective.
DJM Aerial Solutions were also able to utilise the same data to create a bespoke photographic condition survey report in addition to the finalised data set.
3D Model and Orthorectified Imagery
We were able to produce a 3D model and Orthoimage due to the amount of data capture and overlap achieved using the M210 and Z30 the combination of images at different angles and prepositioned heights provided us with the ability to produce millions of common data points which in turn could be converted into a densified point cloud and then onto a HD Mesh overlay.
This 3D Model can then be viewed in BIM software or AutoCAD and measurements taken and or scrutinised for structural defects from the comfort of the workplace with an average ground sampling distance of 0.9cm/px this HD 3D Model has enough detailed info to allow the client to make informed decisions.
