DJI Matrice 210
The DJI Matrice 210 is a newly designed high specification UAV designed in line with industrial practices. DJI have surpassed themselves in designing this machine to operate in an industrial environment. Drone inspection was in the past carried out by the likes of the Falcon 8 or heavy lift UAVs well above the 10kg bracket. These UAVs are fantastically designed but with shorter flight times than the M210, the risks are of course greater with more often than not a lot more mass to fall.
The M210 is capable of 45min flight times with 0 payload utilizing it’s 2 x TB 55, 7660Mah intelligent flight batteries, its flight capabilities are phenomenal. With the ability to operate on one, if its secondary fails and instantly return to home without prompt, landing safely in the same location it takes off from. The M210 has a maximum weight of 6kg this includes its full dual sensor payload configuration allowing attachment of several sensors including the Zenmuse Z30, Zenmuse XT, and Zenmuse X5S. So its mass is around half of its predecessor the M600.
Not only does it have the capability to operate in inclement weather conditions with its IP43 rating we also have acquired a camera for the Matrice M210 that has the capability to inspect any asset from a safe working distance the Zenmuse Z30, with its 30 x optical zoom and 6 x digital zoom combined with its full 1080p HD resolution is a game changer, the options for aerial inspection are now infinite, live plants can remain live, whilst we inspect the asset from the site car park for instance or from a non sensitive zone on site.
Aircraft Saftey Redundancies
Looking at the redundancy of the Matrice M210 we find that it is an amazingly safe unit despite it being a quad. Unlike hexacopters or octocopters you would think a single failure in a motor could lead to a complete loss. However, motor failure generally does not happen especially when correct pre flight checks have been carried out. The redundancies that the Matrice M210 are packed with, are second to none and although a quad copter the safety included within this machine put it in the same category of safety as an octocopter.
The drive circuits contain dual communication and power take off to the motors one digital and one analog. This alleviates any high risk of total motor failure as it allows the motor to continue to operate and drive through any issue if it becomes apparent. Allowing the aircraft to land safely even if a motor does fail the secondary command should still allow operation of the craft.
Payload Configuration
The Matrice M210 has the capability of allowing dual payload configuration, for instance, the Zenmuse Z30 on one side and the Zenmuse XT thermal imaging camera on the other this is a groundbreaking allowing not only thermal inspection but also long range asset inspection or emergency service support.
The M210 also has the ability to mount a sensor to the top of the machine allowing for accurate inspection of overhanging structures such as bridges, pipe racks or gang ways.
