Innovative Underground Pipeline Drone Inspection in Billingham

Underground Pipeline Drone Inspection Success at Billingham, Teesside

Introduction

At DJM Aerial Solutions, our commitment to excellence and innovation has always set us apart as the industry experts in aerial and pipeline inspection services. Recently, we were selected by Mitsubishi Chemicals at Billingham in Teesside to inspect a redundant underground pipeline at the historic old ICI Cassel Works site. This project not only highlighted our advanced technical capabilities but also our reliability in managing complex challenges on-site.

Project Background

Location and Client Overview

The project took place in the heart of Billingham, Teesside, a region known for its rich industrial heritage. Mitsubishi Chemicals, a trusted name in the industry, required a comprehensive inspection of a decommissioned underground pipeline at the former ICI Cassel Works site. The site was undergoing a controlled demolition, necessitating a careful approach to ensure that all live utilities remained fully operational.

The Challenge

A significant challenge arose due to live utilities running across an IPE rack positioned above a local highway, extending into an adjacent site. These utilities were critical and had to remain live throughout the demolition process. The initial plan was to reroute these utilities through the redundant pipeline, which conveniently led to the site opposite but ran underneath the road rather than above it. This strategic rerouting would facilitate the safe disassembly of the pipe rack and ensure minimal disruption to essential services.

Overcoming Inspection Obstacles

The CCTV Crawler Setback

Initially, the client engaged a CCTV crawler company to conduct the pipeline investigation. However, the crawler became immobilized due to the high level of silt within the pipeline. This unexpected setback meant that the crawler had to be recovered, delaying the project and necessitating an alternative, more robust inspection solution.

Our Innovative Approach

Recognizing the urgency and complexity of the situation, DJM Aerial Solutions deployed our state-of-the-art Elios 3 system along with our dynamic DRP technology. These advanced tools allowed us to access the redundant 24-inch pipeline and navigate into the main 60-inch culvert with precision.

  • Elios 3 System: Our high-performance aerial platform provided an agile and comprehensive view of the pipeline’s interior.
  • Dynamic Range Extender (DRP): This technology enabled us to extend our reach, covering a significant length of approximately 75 meters in a single flight.

Detailed Drone Inspection Findings

Our drone inspection revealed critical insights:

  • Silt Accumulation: A significant amount of silt had settled at approximately half the pipe radius in several areas. This sediment buildup posed a potential risk for future maintenance issues and highlighted the importance of routine inspections.
  • Viability for Utility Rerouting: Despite the silt deposits, the main 60-inch culvert demonstrated its suitability for rerouting the live utilities. Once cleaned, the culvert could safely accommodate the extra load, ensuring continuous operation of essential services.

These findings not only confirmed the feasibility of the rerouting plan but also underscored the reliability and thoroughness of our inspection methodology.
