Teesside Drone Inspection Company DJM Aerial Solutions were recently commissioned to undertake an internal survey of a historic Lime Kiln in the Peak District.
Drone inspection company was recently commissioned for a one-off project for mining and aggregate giants Tarmac in the peak district area, a town close to Buxton namely Tunstead which is home to the biggest lime quarry in the UK.
Tarmac approached DJM Aerial Solutions after running into a predicament with their historic kilns prior to planning for a possible upgrade. The kiln itself at been there to dry the lime ready to be processed for use. The kiln had not been internally inspected for decades.
The Kiln was built during the mines infancy so was approaching the 100-year mark and the old techniques for firing it up to generate production was a little dated.
Tarmac’s Tunstead quarry in the heart of the peak district has sat there for over 100 years producing lime for numerous applications with said lime kilns at the heart of their daily operation, which have in turn sat for the duration of the site’s existence, The original kilns now no longer in daily use, are undergoing some improvement to bring them up to the current UK standard and needed a thorough inspection prior to agreeing their upgrade.
The Lime Kiln survey would normally be done by isolating the asset and utilising scaffold or rope access personnel to climb and inspect the refractory makeup within the main body of the kiln, monitoring for any damage or defective issues as a result of decades of general wear and tear from the ignition and colossal heat source contained within

In this instance the threat to personnel whilst inspecting , due to the unknown condition of refractory walls was too great a risk and would certainly pose a threat to life. A remote survey was the only safe and feasible option in terms of costings and Tarmac chose drone survey company DJM Aerial Solutions as their chosen supplier knowing their experience within the engineering sector and hands-on experience with projects of similar note.
