North East UAV Firm Contracted To Retail Giant NEXT For Roof Survey

CS2 Chartered Surveyors

CS2 Chartered Surveyors recognise the strength in utilising UAV Inspection for commercial projects such as building condition surveys or roof asset surveys, especially the case when dealing with the larger building type like the Next distribution centre in the Dearne Valley area of Rotherham we were commisioned to carry out a UAV Inspection and Roof Asset Survey for  CS2 Chartered Surveyors, national experts in the building and asset survey remit. DJM Aerial Solutions are proud to be associated with the firm and Retail Giant, Next.

NEXT Distribution Centre

The buildings requiring a complete project condition survey owned and operated by retail giant Next was awarded to chartered surveying professionals CS2, who have in the past worked with DJM Aerial Solutions on other building condition survey’s in Middlesbrough. DJM Aerial was awarded the work after convincing the chartered survey company CS2 that it could be achievable at a much more cost-effective rate and speedier process opposed to traditional methods of hiring an access platform to gain access to the roof and go about capturing the data on foot.

The two buildings had a total combined surface area of approximately 365,000 square ft rendering it an arduous task to allow for accurate cut edge inspection of each corrugated steel panel and any penetration from utilities such as ventilation or air conditioning units etc. DJM Aerial Solutions had the ability to plan out an automated route to allow for enough data capture of the area to produce an orthomosaic of around 1cm ground sampling distance and zoom into the areas of concern around the roof space to enable detailed roof asset survey remotely.

Traditional Costs vs Drone Hire Cost.

The preferred method for inspection of a roof space such as this one, in particular, would be to gain access to the roof space using an access platform such as the S33 which would be truck mounted, this would be the cheapest traditional option as there would be no requirement for transport to and from the work site, however at a cost of up to £600 per day and an average inspection rate of around 1500sq ft per hour per person. To Inspect this roof on foot would take one person an average of 24 days based on a 10-hour working day. Obviously, this would generally be divided into teams and take less time overall.

Total Cost

For arguments sake let’s consider that a team of 4 employees carry out the inspection on foot, this would reduce the time taken for the inspection down to an average of 6days, that is 6 days hire of the access platform at £600 per day equating to £3600 then the salaries of 4 x chartered surveyors for 6 days at an average of £200 per day dependent on location plus expenses. This equates to an average of £800 per day or £4800 per week. A total of £8400 for 6 days. Then the requirement for a written report schedule. On average the costs associated with an area such as this would be in excess of £10,000 over a 6 day period.

Drone Hire Cost

The cost of hiring a drone and pilot plus observer to carry out this task is significantly less than the above and logistically 85% more effective in both time saved and cost-effectiveness. We at DJM Aerial Solutions are able to complete a project such as this in 1 day and have either the data to you the following day or an extremely rapid turn around on the report schedule. With a standard delivery of RGB data not inclusive of report schedule on a project such as this, we could offer our services starting from £800 per day. Comparative to the above average cost of traditional methods drone hire cost is a huge saving of 92% or £9200. Drone hire cost is significantly better value all round and can capture aerial data at much better volumes than traditional methods.
