Tees Valley drone service provider DJM Aerial Solutions were recently awarded the task of collating data from the historic Metro train depot in Tyne and Wear for Atkins Global.
Metro Train Depot Gosforth
The Metro rail network has long been a solid part of Tyne and Wears integral transport infrastructure and although now a little tired around the edges and slightly dated. The Metro rail network continues to provide the region with the necessary transport facilities to allow a flowing commute to and from the general public(s) place of work.
Officially opened by the Queen in November 1981 the decision was made to upgrade the old original rail system due to the requirement for regional growth and the need to be rid of the original rail circuit which was hindering the area’s economy.
The new Metro rail system was built on the original early foundation and infrastructure built between 1834 and 1882 with construction starting on the new metro rail system in 1974 and was the first rail network in the UK to use the metric system.
The Metro rail depot which DJM Aerial Solutions were tasked with roof survey was originally constructed in 1923 to house the equipment and spares of Tyneside Electric, known as South Gosforth Car Sheds. It was inherited by Metro Tyne and Wear upon opening in the eighties.

Nexus and the Tyne and Wear Metro rail system is currently going through an enormous growth project with the replacement of their fleet of trains. Circa 42 x new trains will be replacing the fleet of trains that Nexus currently operate from the Tyne and Wear region.
The current train depot in Gosforth needs to be purpose-built to accommodate the new fleet of equipment that Nexus will operate and maintain, however, the original 1920’s Metro rail depot will require continued upkeep until the new development is complete.
DJM Aerial Solutions were employed via global Engineering Giant, “Atkins Global” to carry out a complex drone survey or high level inspection of the historic building roof structure, including orthorectified imagery, point cloud and HD Mesh. Allowing full analysis of Nexus Metro rail depot roof asset.
Nexus Metro Depot Roof Project
The plan for the metro depot is to demolish the original and rebuild it towards the south area of the train track. This is not likely to happen within the next few years so maintenance of the original metro depot is absolutely paramount but also cost-effective given the future of the building. They currently have issues with rainwater penetration caused by guttering blockages due to Seagulls nesting between the pitched areas of the roof asset. Which has in the past also caused electrical outages and other issues.
The client Atkins Global assigned DJM Aerial Solutions on the basis, that their experience with projects of a similar size but also their expertise with commercial roof inspections such as this one at 20,000 sq/m. The risk mitigation process for this particular roof high level inspection was intense due to the inherent risk of high voltage overhead power lines. 20KV DC lines to power the trains and live tracks. Resulting in several permissions sought.
DJM Aerial Solutions MD Dan Maine added, ” We were tasked with not only a photographic condition survey of the Metro Depot roof asset, but also a high-resolution Ortho Photo of the entire asset, essentially providing a massive single image, made up of over 4000 high-resolution files merged into one single image that can be inspected offline. But also the requirement for us flying directly above the building was extended to a full day due to the amount of data required to produce this. The tracks were live with trains running in both directions constantly. We were expecting issues with EMF interference throughout the day and decided to utilise the M210 with dual safety redundancies, across the board, it performed as expected without hiccup”
