Wind Turbine Drone Inspection in the North East: Comprehensive Blade Assessment
Project Overview
DJM Aerial Solutions was commissioned to conduct a full wind turbine inspection in the North East. The project involved external surveys of the tower, nacelle, hub, and blades, as well as internal blade inspections using the Elios 3 confined space drone. The objective was to provide the client with a complete understanding of the turbine’s condition while eliminating the need for rope access or extended downtime.
Challenges of Traditional Wind Turbine Inspections
Conventional inspection methods for wind turbines are often costly, time-consuming, and hazardous:
- Rope Access Risks: Requires working at height in exposed conditions.
- Operational Downtime: Extended shutdowns are often needed, reducing productivity.
- Limited Data Capture: Manual inspection may miss internal defects or provide inconsistent results.

DJM Aerial Solutions’ Approach
To overcome these challenges, DJM Aerial Solutions combined external UAV surveys with internal blade inspections using the Elios 3 drone. This approach provided:
- High-Resolution External Surveys: Visual inspection of tower, nacelle, hub, and blade surfaces.
- Confined Space UAV Technology: Internal blade inspections with Elios 3, designed to operate safely in GPS-denied, enclosed environments.
- Comprehensive Data: Both external and internal perspectives of turbine condition in a single project.
Inspection Process and Results
Objectives:
- Assess overall condition of turbine components.
- Identify defects inside turbine blades.
- Provide actionable reporting for maintenance planning.
Methodology:
- External aerial drone surveys of major turbine components.
- Internal blade inspections using Elios 3 UAV with 4K imaging and collision-tolerant design.
Findings:
- Blade Defects Identified: Multiple issues along leading and trailing edges of each blade.
- Clear Evidence: High-resolution images and video documented each defect.
- Actionable Reporting: Enabled precise repair planning, avoiding unnecessary exploratory work.
Benefits and Advantages
The combined drone inspection approach delivered significant benefits:
- Enhanced Safety: Eliminated the need for rope access or confined space entry by personnel.
- Reduced Downtime: Inspections were completed quickly, minimising disruption.
- Comprehensive Insights: Provided a full picture of turbine condition, inside and out.
- Targeted Maintenance: Defects were clearly identified, supporting efficient and cost-effective repair strategies.
Client Satisfaction and Outcome
The client was highly satisfied with the inspection results. The comprehensive dataset provided clear evidence of blade defects and allowed for accurate maintenance scheduling, reducing downtime and costs. The project reinforced the value of advanced UAV technology in renewable energy asset management.
